- Fully cooperative — you all win together, or you all lose together
- One phrase is your only channel: tone of voice is the whole message
- Small box, five-minute teach — an ideal opener or closer
- Two extra variants for players who want a harder game
They say the gods who created the universe selflessly arranged the stars into their most natural, harmonious order. As gods yourselves, you will now work together to move the planets and create a harmonious universe of your own.
Players' ultimate goal is to arrange the planet cards in the exact correct order — but here is the catch: you are only allowed to communicate with the phrase “OH MY GOD”, in any expression and intonation. Just imagine everyone squeezing their faces and their voices as hard as they can, just to make sure the others understand.
Syzygy also provides extra variants for players who expect a more daunting challenge. The rules can be learned in under a minute, but the joy and the memories are timeless.
Goal
At the end of the game, reveal all nine planet cards. If they read 1 to 9, or 9 to 1, from left to right, every player wins together.
Components
- 9 planet cards
- 24 divine tokens (4 each in 6 colours)
- 6 player reference cards
- 1 black hole card (used in the Trial of the Gods variant)
Setup
- Shuffle the 9 planet cards face down and lay them out in a single row.
- Each player takes a reference card and the 4 divine tokens of one colour, placing them on the printed spaces of their reference card.
- The player whose catchphrase is “OH MY GOD” goes first (or choose a start player any way you like).
Turn Overview
Starting with the first player and going clockwise, choose one of two actions on your turn:
- A. Look and move — choose a planet card that does not already carry one of your tokens, peek at it, then move it between any two other cards (it may not go to either end of the row, and it may not stay where it was). Finally place one of your divine tokens on it. Tokens must be used in ascending order.
- B. Pass — place your lowest-numbered remaining token face down to show it has been spent, and end your turn.
The OH MY GOD Rule
Whenever you look at a planet card, you must say: “OH MY GOD!”
Tone, volume and emotion are entirely up to you — but beyond that phrase, communication of any kind is forbidden. Whether your fellow gods can read your exclamation is the whole game.
End of the Game
Once every player has taken 4 actions, the game ends. Reveal the planet cards one by one and check whether they run 1 to 9 or 9 to 1. If they do, everyone wins together — celebrate the miracle of a universe born in order.
Variants
- Trial of the Gods — one planet has been swallowed by a black hole. Use only planets 1 to 7, place the black hole card in the centre with 3 cards on each side; the black hole can never be looked at or moved. At the end, place the missing planet you set aside onto the black hole and check for 1 to 7 or 7 to 1.
- Divine Challenge (very hard) — as Trial of the Gods, but using all nine planets: 4 cards on each side of the black hole, with the remaining card set aside as the lost planet.
What is a syzygy?
An astronomical alignment of three or more celestial bodies in a straight line — most often used for the Sun, the Earth and one other body lining up.
